Making a Rainbow With Candy 🌈

This is such a fun experiment for toddlers. Mostly because they are able to do everything by themselves and see the final result. You only need 3 ingredients to make the rainbow appear. We always like to ask questions in the process like what do you think it's going to happen? What if we use milk or juice instead of water? and just sparkle a conversation to get the creativity and imagination flowing. Have fun!

DIFFICULTY

  • Easy

MATERIALS

  • Skittles or M&Ms

  • Water

  • Plate

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place candy around the plate. You will see different patterns based on the order.

  2. Pour water in the middle of the plate. Make sure it has enough water to cover the candy but don't over do it.

  3. Wait for the "magic".

QUESTIONS TO ASK

  • What did you see? Why?

  • What would happen if we change the order of the skittles?

  • What if we change the liquid to milk? or juice?

THE SCIENCE

Skittles are made and coated with sugar, so once you add water to it the coloring and coat begin to dissolve very quickly.

SAFETY

  • Adult supervision required for any of these activities. Please supervise and make sure children participating are safe. Read instructions and the safety labels from each used materials.
